Google Business Profile Support for Retailers
For shops, the Google Business Profile connects local searches to real footfall. Shoppers check whether you are open, how to find you and what other customers think. Independent shops and multi-store retailers face different challenges, from a single profile with the wrong hours to several stores that need consistent details, store codes and careful handling when a shop relocates.
- Single and multi-store profiles reviewed
- Store codes and consistency checked
- Relocations and closures planned properly

Why it matters
Why the profile matters for a shop
Illustrative. Outcomes are decided by Google.
Many shopping trips start with a quick search. People want to know whether you stock what they need, whether you are open now and how far away you are. An accurate profile with good photos, correct hours and recent reviews can turn that search into a visit. A missing, suspended or out-of-date profile can send the same shopper to a competitor down the road.
Retailers with more than one shop have an extra layer to manage. Each store needs its own accurate profile, and keeping names, categories and hours consistent across them takes planning. Businesses with several locations may be able to use bulk management and store codes to keep things organised. Openings, closures and relocations all need handling carefully so customers are not sent to an empty unit.
Common issues
Business Profile problems retailers can run into
Inconsistent details across stores
Different name formats, categories or hours across several store profiles can confuse shoppers and make management harder, especially when changes are made by different people.
Relocation creates duplicates
Creating a new profile for a moved shop, instead of updating the existing one, can leave two listings live and split reviews between the old and new addresses.
Closed stores still showing
Shops that have closed but remain live on Google may send customers to an empty unit and attract reviews that damage the rest of the business.
Concessions and shop-in-shops
A concession inside another store may not qualify for its own profile unless it genuinely operates as a separate business with its own staff and hours.
Getting the setup right
Store addresses, multiple locations and store codes
Shops that customers visit during stated hours should generally show their real address, with permanent signage and staff present. Each genuine store can usually have its own profile. Retailers with several locations may be eligible for bulk verification, depending on the circumstances, and can assign store codes so each profile is easy to identify and manage.
When a shop moves, Google's guidelines generally expect the existing profile's address to be updated, rather than a new profile created, so history and reviews stay with the business. Reverification may be requested after the change. When a store closes permanently, it can be marked as permanently closed. We can help you plan these changes in a sensible order.
Verification and appeals
Evidence that may help a retailer
Evidence should be genuine, current and consistent with your profile. What is relevant depends on the case.
- Photos of permanent shop signage and the shopfront
- Photos of the shop floor, tills and stock displays
- Commercial lease or business rates bill for each store
- Utility bill in the business name at the store address
- Company registration and trading name details
- Store list showing each address, store code and opening hours
How we help
How we can support your business
- 1
Audit your stores
We compare your list of open, closed and relocated stores against the profiles that exist on Google, including duplicates and listings created by others.
- 2
Check consistency
We review names, categories, hours and store codes across your profiles and explain where anything may conflict with Google's Business Profile guidelines.
- 3
Plan changes carefully
For openings, relocations and closures, we help you decide the right order of edits so customers see accurate information and any reverification is manageable.
- 4
Support any appeal
If a store profile is suspended, we help you gather genuine evidence and prepare a factual appeal through Google's own process. The final decision rests with Google.
FAQs
Questions from retailers
We are moving our shop. Should we create a new profile?
Generally no. Google's guidelines usually expect you to update the address on the existing profile so its history and reviews move with the business. Creating a new profile can leave a duplicate behind. Google may ask you to reverify after the move, so it helps to have evidence of the new premises ready.
What are store codes and do we need them?
Store codes are unique identifiers you can give each location in your account. They are mainly useful for businesses with several shops, as they make it easier to manage and update profiles in bulk. A single independent shop does not usually need to worry about them.
One of our shops has closed. What should we do with its profile?
If the closure is permanent, marking the profile as permanently closed is usually the appropriate step, rather than leaving it live with outdated details. If the shop has simply moved, updating the address is normally the better option. We can help you decide which applies to each store.
Can our concession inside a department store have its own profile?
It depends on how it operates. If it has its own staff, hours and customer service that are genuinely separate from the host store, it may be eligible. If it is simply a section of another shop, a separate profile may not meet Google's guidelines. We can review your arrangement.
