Google Business Profile Support for Home Service Businesses

Painters, handymen, gardeners, pest control, window cleaners and many other home service businesses rely on local searches for new work. If your trade does not fit neatly into one category, or you offer several services, your Google Business Profile can be harder to set up correctly. We help you review it and resolve problems.

  • Guidance for mixed and multi trade firms
  • Service-area and category reviews

Why it matters

Why home service businesses need a clear profile

Illustrative. Outcomes are decided by Google.

Home service customers usually want someone local, available and trustworthy to come into their home. Whether they need a garden tidied, a room decorated or a wasps' nest removed, they often choose from the map results, based on reviews, photos and the areas covered. A clear Google Business Profile makes it easy for them to see that you do exactly what they need, close to where they live.

This page is for home service providers that do not fit a single trade, or that offer a mix of services. Multi trade firms and handyman businesses often struggle to pick a primary category, may be tempted to create separate profiles for each service, and can find verification difficult without a shop. Getting the structure right reduces the risk of duplicates, suspensions and a profile that appears for the wrong searches.

Common issues

Common profile problems for home service businesses

One profile per service

Creating separate profiles for painting, gardening and handyman work under one business is usually treated as duplication and can lead to enforcement on some or all listings.

Choosing the wrong primary category

The primary category strongly influences which searches you appear for. A vague or inaccurate choice can leave the profile appearing less often for your main work.

Home address on show

Many home service providers work from home. Displaying that address when customers do not visit can conflict with the guidelines and may prompt a review.

Verification without premises

Without a shop or office, video verification can be tricky. Branded vehicles, equipment and business documents may help demonstrate that the business is genuine and actively trading.

Getting the setup right

Service area, storefront or hybrid for home services

Most home service businesses travel to customers, so the profile is normally a service-area business with the address hidden and a realistic service area. The hidden address should be where you genuinely run the business. One business should normally have one profile, with categories and services covering its main work, rather than separate listings for each service.

Some home service businesses do have premises customers visit, such as a garden centre, a flooring showroom or a shop selling supplies. If that site is staffed during your listed hours and has permanent signage, it may be appropriate to show the address as well as a service area. We can look at your mix of services and premises and explain which setup fits.

Verification and appeals

Evidence that may help home service businesses

Evidence should be genuine, current and consistent with your profile. What is relevant depends on the case.

  • Branded vehicle, uniforms or equipment showing your business name
  • Customer invoices or quotes issued under your trading name
  • Relevant trade registrations or licences, where your work requires them
  • Public liability insurance certificate in the business name
  • Business bank statement or utility bill matching the business address
  • Website and social profiles with consistent name and phone number

I offer handyman, painting and garden work. Which category should I choose?

Choose the primary category that best describes the main part of your business, then add a small number of additional categories for other genuine services. Specific jobs can be listed in the services section and description. If the business is split fairly evenly, we can help you think through which primary category is most accurate.

Can I create one profile for each service I offer?

Usually not. Google generally expects one profile per business. Separate listings for different services of the same business can be treated as duplicates and may lead to suspension. If you run genuinely separate businesses with their own names, branding and operations, the position can differ, but it needs careful review.

Is a home service business eligible for a Google Business Profile?

Many are, as long as the business makes in person contact with customers, either at their premises or at your own staffed location. Purely online businesses are generally not eligible. If you visit customers' homes to provide your service, a service-area profile is usually the right setup.

My trade needs a licence. Does that affect my profile?

Where your work legally requires a licence or registration, such as some pest control or waste carrier activities, having it in the business name can support verification or an appeal. It also helps show customers that you operate properly. Requirements differ between trades, so check which apply to you.
