Why it matters

Why builders need a reliable profile

Illustrative. Outcomes are decided by Google.

Building projects involve large sums and months of work, so customers take their time choosing. They look at photos of previous jobs, read reviews in detail and often check whether a builder has been around for a while. A Google Business Profile with a steady history of genuine reviews and project photos helps show you are a real, established firm. Losing it, even temporarily, can interrupt the flow of quality enquiries.

Builders often have more complex setups than other trades. Some trade through a limited company with a different registered office, some have partners or family members involved, and many use subcontractors. Profiles may have been created years ago by someone who has since left. Ownership, access and duplicate listings are common headaches, alongside the usual questions about whether the business should show an address or a service area.

Common issues

Common profile problems for builders

Lost access to an old profile

A profile set up by a former partner, web designer or employee can leave you without owner access. Requesting ownership through Google's process takes time and the right information.

Duplicates after rebranding

Changing from a sole trader name to a limited company, or rebranding, can leave duplicate listings behind that split your reviews and confuse customers looking for you.

Registered office as business address

Showing an accountant's address or registered office where customers cannot visit may be treated as an ineligible location by Google and can lead to enforcement action.

Photos that do not belong to you

Uploading stock images or photos of other firms' work can mislead customers and may result in content being removed. Your own project photos are far stronger.

Getting the setup right

Address or service area for building firms

Most builders work on customers' properties rather than receiving customers at an office. In that case the profile should normally be a service-area business with the address hidden, and a service area that reflects where you genuinely take on projects. The hidden address should be where you actually run the business, which may be a home office or a yard.

If you have a staffed office or showroom that customers visit during your listed hours, with permanent signage, showing that address alongside a service area may be appropriate. A registered office used only for post is not a suitable location. We can review your company structure, trading names and premises, then explain which setup is likely to fit Google's guidelines.

Verification and appeals

Evidence that may help builders

Evidence should be genuine, current and consistent with your profile. What is relevant depends on the case.

  • Signed vehicles, site boards or hoardings showing your business name
  • Customer contracts or invoices issued under the trading name
  • Insurance certificate showing the business name
  • Trade association membership, where you genuinely hold one
  • Business bank statement or utility bill at the business address
  • Companies House record showing directors and company details

A former business partner still owns our Google profile. What can we do?

If you cannot get them to transfer access, Google has an ownership request process that may let you ask for access. It usually involves showing you are authorised to manage the business. It can take time and outcomes vary. We can help you prepare the request and explain what to expect at each stage.

We changed from a sole trader to a limited company. Do we need a new profile?

Usually not. If it is the same business continuing at the same location or service area, updating the existing profile is normally the better option, as it keeps your reviews and history. Creating a new profile can leave a duplicate behind. Name changes can trigger reverification, so it helps to prepare evidence first.

Can I list loft conversions and extensions as separate categories?

You can choose categories that genuinely describe your business, and list specific services such as loft conversions or extensions in the services section and description. Choosing a clear primary category is more important than adding many extra ones. We can review your categories and services to check they are accurate.

Can I post photos of projects we did as subcontractors?

Photos should represent your own work and business accurately. If you carried out the work, sharing photos may be reasonable, but take care not to imply you were the main contractor if you were not, and respect the client's privacy. Honest, accurate photos build more trust than a borrowed portfolio.
